LG’s SmartThinQ Hub aims to be the gateway to your automated home

Sporting a metallic body, the SmartThinQ Hub works with smart washing machines, refrigerators, ovens, robotic vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, and a variety of sensors. Conventional home appliances can also connect to the SmartThinQ sensors over Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Bluetooth.

At CES 2016, LG is also showing off its latest addition to the IoT ecosystem, the SmartThinQ Hub. Designed to be a “gateway to smart sensors and connected appliances in the home”, it also has the ability to display reminders from personal calendars and stream music from free iHeartRadio stations or a Bluetooth-enabled mobile device via its built-in speaker.

Thanks to its 3.5-inch color LCD display and integrated speaker, users can read or even hear notifications. Communication between the smart appliances and smart sensors is managed through a dedicated SmarThinQ app.

To ensure compatibility with devices from other manufacturers and service providers, the SmartThinQ Hub supports the AllJoyn Alliance open-source framework. LG recently formed a partnership with Lowe’s to integrate its smart devices with Lowe’s Iris smart home services. More partnerships are apparently in the works.
