Popular crowd-funding platform Kickstarter has just reached a major milestone. It has successfully raised over US$1 billion in pledges. And to celebrate, they created a page listing some interesting tidbits and information about how this figure was reached.
According to Kickstarter, this figure was reached thanks to 5.7 million users who have pledged and backed projects. Interestingly, more than US$500 million was pledged in the past year alone, signifying the tremendous growth of Kickstarter in recent times.
The U.S. has raised the most money by far, with over US$663 million pledged. The U.K. and Canada are a distant second and third, with US$54 million and US$44 million pledged respectively. Quite surprisingly, Singapore is one of the top 10 most active countries, with over US$6.7 million pledged.
Crowd-funding has opened a lot of opportunities for people and have enabled some really cool stuff - such as the Pebble smart watch - to be made, however, it is not all rosy. As we have written in the past, crowd-funding platforms is also a rich hunting ground for unscrupulous project starters and outright con men.
