Google has released its VP8 video codec to everyone with its WebM project, but how does it fare against the incumbent leader, H.264?

Ever since Google announced last week that it was releasing its VP8 video codec to the world with its WebM project, there has been talk that it could be a viable and free alternative to H.264. But how does it compare? Here's an early look:

Streamingmedia.com - VP8 is now free, but if the quality is substandard, who cares? Well, it turns out that the quality isn't substandard, so that's not an issue, but neither is it twice the quality of H.264 at half the bandwidth. See for yourself, below.
