Google Wins Viacom Copyright Infringement Suit

It has been hanging in the courts for a few years now, but Google and YouTube has emerged the victor in a billion dollar lawsuit initiated by Viacom, which claimed that YouTube was infringing on its copyright. Despite the fact that YouTube has responded to takedown notices from Viacom on infringing material uploaded by users, satisfying the condition for 'safe harbor'  status, Viacom went ahead with its lawsuit. Now that it has lost the judgment, the company stated that it intends to appeal the court decision.

Ars Technica - It was a billion dollar lawsuit, and YouTube has won—for now. The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has rejected Viacom's claim that Google's premier video site was guilty of massive copyright infringement. Instead, the court has granted Google's motion for summary judgment and asserted that YouTube fully qualifies for "safe harbor" protections under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
