Google Reportedly Acquiring Artificial Intelligence Firm DeepMind
According to reports and rumors, Google is in the midst of acquiring artificial intelligence firm DeepMind for US$400 million.
It appears that Google is on an acquisition spree. Just two weeks ago, Google acquired Nest, a smart home startup, for US$3.2 billion. And today, there are reports that the search giants are shelling out US$400 million for artificial intelligence firm DeepMind.
Based in London, DeepMind is founded and headed by Demis Hassabis, a neuroscientist; and Jaan Tallin, a developer for Skype and Kazaa; and Shane Legg, a researcher.
Hassabis, in particular, is somewhat of a child chess prodigy and reached master standard by 13 with an Elo rating of 2300 - which was, at the time, the second highest in the world.
The deal is said to be a talent acquisition, which makes sense considering Google already has a substantial interest in artificial intelligence and robotics.
