Disney+ embarks on its password-sharing crackdown with a paid "Extra Member" plan. Image: Disney+.
One year after announcing that it would crack down on password sharing, Disney rolled out a new paid "Extra Member" plan in Singapore and other countries to grow revenue and its subscriber base.
The "Extra Member" plan allows the account holder to add one family member or friend to his/her account subscription, even if they are not part of the household, at an additional S$6.98/month.
According to Disney, a household is "a collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside there."
The family member or friend needs to fulfill the following criteria before he/she can sign up as an Extra Member:
- At least 18 years old
- Reside in the same country where the Disney+ subscription was created
- Cannot have an active or cancelled Disney+ subscription
The Extra Member is limited to one digital profile and can only stream/download on one device at a time.
In comparison, the Disney+ Standard Plan (S$12.98/month) supports up to two devices at the same time while the Disney+ Premium ($15.98/month) allows you to watch on up to four devices simultaneously.
If you're the main Disney+ account holder, do note that the subscription fee for the Extra Member will be billed monthly to you even if your Disney+ subscription is billed annually.
Disney's move to add an Extra Member plan comes more than a year after Netflix rolled out a similar option for Standard (S$19.98/month) and Premium (S$25.98/month) subscribers. Netflix Premium subscribers have the option to add two extra members at S$6.98 each/month.
