Another one bites the dust. Book Depository has just announced that it will be closing on 26 April 2023.
The popular online bookstore was acquired by Amazon back in 2011 and this move comes as part of Amazon's extensive efforts to review its operations and cut costs.
Andy Chart, Book Depository's head of vendor management, said:
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you, from everyone at Book Depository and our book-loving customers, for your supportive partnership over the years in helping us to make printed books more accessible to readers around the world
A few weeks ago, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a memo to employees announcing that the company would be laying off an additional 9,000 workers on top of the 18,000 job cuts that were announced a couple of months back.
Following this announcement, Amazon confirmed that it's shutting down the legendary digital photography website DPReview.
Amazon did not reveal how many jobs will be lost at Book Depository nor did it say how many employees will be redeployed elsewhere.
According to Book Depository, they will still be accepting orders until 26 April 2023, 12pm BST (7pm SGT) and they will continue to deliver and provide support for orders until 23 June 2023.
On a personal note, I will miss Book Depository. Because of its wide selection and worldwide free shipping, it is the place where I buy most of my books.
