All New Homes to be Installed with Fibre Points According to Revised Code by IDA
To provide easier access to fibre broadband for new homes, the IDA has made some changes to the Code of Practice for Info-communication Facilities in Buildings (COPIF), which include the installation of optical fibre points in all new homes. These revisions will take effect from 1 May 2013.
A revision to the Code of Practice for Info-communication Facilities in Buildings (COPIF) will see all new homes being installed with optical fibre points. Taking effect from 1 May 2013, these new homes will also gain easier access to fibre broadband with Category 6 cabling being installed in the living rooms and bedrooms. The cabling can carry data speeds of more than 1 Gbps for faster data speeds.
The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has also made another revision to the code, with new and existing building developers and owners being required to set aside rent-free Mobile Deployment Space (MDS). This space is meant for mobile operators to deploy more equipment for enhanced mobile coverage.
Mr Leong Keng Thai, IDA Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General (Telecoms & Post), had this to say about the revisions:
"The changes in this COPIF are to ensure that homes are built for future infocomm needs brought about by developments such as the nationwide deployment of the Next Gen NBN, the increasing mobile penetration rate, and the increasing pervasiveness of smartphones, and other mobile broadband-enabled devices. These changes will benefit consumers and improve their mobile and broadband experiences."
