Watch: cinema5D’s interview with Takashi Ueno spills the beans on the video capabilities of the new Fujifilm GFX

cinema5D has just published a video interview with Takashi Ueno, manager at Fujifilm about the video capabilities of their latest GFX 50S.

In the interview with cinema5D above, Ueno-san touches on the video capabilities of the GFX 50S (or lack thereof). It’s interesting to see how upfront he is about video not being a top priority for medium format cameras, and how he acknowledges that Fujifilm remains focused on being a “photo first” company.

As he says: “The GFX 50S does only HD video, and is meant to be used 80-90% of the time for stills.” While the GFX 50S has a sensor with more than enough pixels for 4K capture, the sheer amount of data from the larger pixels means that the sensor readout speed will not be fast enough for anything more than HD video.

So, if sensor readout technologies improve so that the readout speed is able to keep up with current processor speeds, that certainly will be a possibility in the future. For now though, Fujifilm is going to work on lenses that maximize the resolving power of 100MP sensors to fully bring out the potential of any future sensors.

Interestingly enough, Ueno-san mentions towards the end of the clip that he sees Medium Format cameras being used for video as a possibility in just two or three more years! He thinks videographers will take advantage of the larger sensor size to produce videos in all sorts of different formats and so Fuji will of course focus on building their capabilities in preparation for that day.
