Sony today (13 July 2023) announced a new E-mount telephoto zoom lens that’s compatible with its 35mm full-frame α-series cameras.

The Sony FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II is a 794g zoom lens made for sports, landscape, aviary, and macro photography. According to Sony, it offers a 70mm to 200mm range by default, with half-macro 0.5x capability throughout the zoom range if you’re shooting on a 35mm full-frame camera (0.75x equivalent on an APS-C sensor camera instead).

Sony claimed that the FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II is the world’s first to offer a half-macro capability of this zoom range, on top of other lens technologies for a telephoto shooter that covers both full-frame and APS-C type cameras. The company also said it’s the 50th full-frame E-mount lens it has made.

When compared to its predecessor (the SEL70200G), the FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II Lens (SEL70200G2) offers 20% faster autofocus speed, double the tracking performance for moving subjects, greatly-improved focus tracking, and 30FPS burst shooting if paired with the flagship Sony α1

Additionally, it has a new MODE3 setting for SteadyShot (its stabilisation mode), which offers extra framing stability for moving subjects.

It supports accessories, like a separately sold teleconverter, to get a 400mm range (600mm if you’re on APS-C cameras). It can also do 1:1 macro shots if you have the SEL20TC attachment.

Sony said that the FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II will be officially in Singapore come July 2023 at Sony Stores (official and authorised), as well as the Sony Online Store and other authorised dealers. No official pricing has been revealed yet.

Sony also launched a new 26MP APS-C camera alongside this new lens, the flagship Sony A6700.
