Sony has just launched a compact standard zoom lens called the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G or SEL2450G that looks like it could be the perfect travelling companion for your full-frame Alpha camera.

There are a couple of things that make this such an ideal lens for travel. To start, it's remarkably compact, measuring a little over 9cm in length, and weighing 440g. This keeps your camera setup small and light.

It also covers a range of popular focal lengths, making it suitable for landscape, street, and portrait photography. I think users will appreciate the constant F2.8 aperture, which makes it handy in low-light situations or when you want to use a shallow depth of field to create subject separation.

And if you are thinking of going somewhere and putting this lens to work, I can thoroughly recommend Japan. It is often said that the light in Japan "hits different", and having been there numerous times, I can confirm that it's true. And if you do decide to head to Japan, be sure to check out our Japan travel guide. Alright, I digress, back to the lens.

In terms of control, the SEL2450G has focus, zoom, and aperture rings. The aperture ring can also be "de-clicked", which can be useful for video shooting.

The SEL2450G uses two linear motors for fast auto-focusing. Sony claims this lens is fast enough to keep up with the 120fps shooting of the Alpha 9 III. The minimum focusing distance at the wide and telescopic ends are 19cm and 30cm respectively.

Availability and pricing

Unfortunately, pricing has yet to be determined, but Sony says the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens will be available sometime at the end of April 2024 and that pre-orders will start in early March 2024. We will update this article with pricing details once we get them.

The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens is S$1,639 and is available for pre-order now. Pre-orders made between now and 31st March will get a free BB Nano portable electronic blower (dust blower). The lens will be available in retail in mid April.
