Rumor: Patent for an EF/EF-S adaptor hints to a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera

A patent showing an EF/EF-S adaptor for a non-existent full-frame Canon camera has appeared online and it seems to be causing a bit of a stir online. Is this a possible full-frame mirrorless body from Canon?

Blogger Egami has spotted another Canon patent online (patent no. 2015-118208) and has noted that it’s for a camera body that allows the user to use both EF and EF-S lenses by way of a switch that changes the diameter of the flare cut stop, thus compensating for a smaller image circle if an EF-S lens is mounted. He also notes that the flange distance indicates that the body will be shorter than your typical DSLR, hence indicating that the design is for a mirrorless body.

What’s also interesting is his observation that while Nikon has gone with specific product lines for their mirrorless and DSLR offerings, Canon seems to be approaching mirrorless as something that should fit with their existing products, thus ensuring long term compatibility. As Egami notes, patent filings can never be considered as proof of commercialization, as they sometimes are simply means for companies to train their rookie researchers, but it certainly is interesting for the rest of us to get a peek into thought processes of camera makers all the same.
