Nikon’s new Coolpix P1000 takes you closer than ever
Nikon's new compact camera offers a 125x optical zoom telephoto lens.
Nikon’s Coolpix P900 impressed us greatly back in 2015 with its superlative 24-2000mm focal length zoom lens and speedy response when we did our superzoom digital camera shootout. Three years down and now Nikon have released its successor – the Coolpix P1000.
This comes with an even longer 125x optical zoom lens giving you the equivalent of a 24-3000mm lens at just a fraction of the length and weight of a typical full-frame option. The camera again uses a 16MP backside illumination CMOS image sensor, but this is now paired with a new EXPEED image-processing engine for faster response and better image quality.

Of course, the camera also comes with Dual Detect Optical VR that gives you the equivalent of up to 5.0 stops of compensation so you can take steady images at lower shutter speeds. This stabilization will also undoubtedly come in handy to counteract camera movements at longer focal lengths.
The Coolpix P1000 again comes with a 921k dot, 3.2” vari-angle LCD, making it easier for you to get just the right angle for your shot. There’s also a 2359k-dot OLED viewfinder with 0.68x magnification for easier framing and viewing of images while taking pictures. The smooth control ring from the P900 is again present, as is the snapback zoom button which lets you easily adjust your framing.
The vari-angle LCD makes it easier to get shots from awkward angles.
Where the Coolpix P900 could only do up to Full HD quality, the new Coolpix P1000 can record in 4K UHD 3840x2160 quality (25/30p) for up to 29 minutes at a go. It also comes with timelapse and superlapse (up to 30x) recording functions, so you can easily create videos that manipulate the flow of time for your viewers. On that note, the camera comes with a HDMI port for recording and playback to an external monitor and a microphone jack for better audio capture, making it easy to truly get great videos out from this prosumer camera.
As with all of Nikon’s latest cameras, the Coolpix P1000 comes with SnapBridge compatibility so you can send your images straight to your smartphone and from there, the world.

Local pricing and availability information has yet to be released, but the Coolpix P1000 is available for pre-order now in the US for US$999.95 with a release date of September 6th, so we can probably expect this to be available towards the end of the year here for around S$1,500.
