Microsoft Windows Finally Receives RAW Format Support
Microsoft will now support RAW format images with Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. The RAW format is essentially an uncompressed image consisting of captured pixels with a one-to-one correspondence to the camera's image sensor.
Working with RAW image files on Windows used to be a frustrating experience, since they required third-party applications such as Corel PaintShop Photo Pro or Adobe Photoshop. Well, those days are over, for Microsoft has finally released a codec pack (Microsoft Camera Codec Pack) which enables you to view and edit RAW files via the Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 application.
SlashGear - For those of you who find not being able to preview RAW format images in Windows to be quite annoying, then be relieved to know that Microsoft has finally addressed the issue. You will now be able to preview and edit them natively in Windows. The software giant released a codec pack for Windows 7 and Vista that will bring support for RAW format image viewing to the Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Explorer.
Edited RAW images can either be saved as a JPEG file or Microsoft's JPEG-XR format. More on Microsoft's update here.
