The Insta360 ONE R was launched more than two years ago, with an interesting modular proposition of interchangeable lenses that allowed you to adapt the camera as an action camera or 360-degree video camera in one compact body. It has taken two years, but the ONE R's successor has finally been announced.
The Insta360 ONE RS is a big upgrade with a very familiar design, and you can probably tell by the name that it succeeds the ONE R by building upon it rather than being a complete overhaul. So what are the major improvements the ONE RS brings to the table?
The ONE RS will feature a brand new 4K Boost Lens, which now boasts a massive 1/2-inch 48MP sensor with a faster F2.4 lens. In comparison, the ONE R's 4K lens only featured a 12MP sensor with an F2.8 lens. Besides supporting 4K60 video and 48MP stills, the new 4K Boost Lens will also enable two new features for the ONE RS - Active HDR and 6K Widescreen (2.35:1 aspect ratio) video support.
The other two lens modules - 1-inch wide angle and 360-degree - remain the same as the ONE R. And this is where the design similarity and backwards compatibility comes into play. From what we understand, the ONE R will eventually be able to use the new 4K Boost lens as well with a firmware upgrade in the future.
Insta360 also boasts an upgraded Core processing module - though the spec sheet doesn't really reveal exact details. In any case, the ONE RS is now powerful enough to have in-camera hardware FlowState stabilisation up to 4K60. The ONE R was not able to do this, and you had to apply software stabilisation in post-production.
Other improvements of the ONE RS over the ONE R include better audio quality (three mics vs two), larger battery (1445mAh vs 1190mAh), and a new mounting bracket with a quick release mechanism for faster lens changing. Water resistance remains at IPX8.
