Canon has launched the RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM – a new full-frame RF mount ultra wide-angle zoom lens.

As its name implies, this lens has a bright f/2.8 constant aperture. Canon also said it is the company's second non-professional-grade constant aperture zoom lens.

Despite not being a professional-grade lens, Canon claims this lens is built to the same standard as a professional-grade L-series lens, which means it has weather-sealed ring and mount joints, and is dust and drip-resistant.

One notable highlight of the lens is its size and weight. It's 91mm tall when fully retracted and weighs just 445g, which makes it considerably more compact than the RF15-35mm f2.8L IS USM – Canon's other ultra wide-angle zoom RF lens.

The lens consists of 16 elements in 13 groups, with two aspherical lenses, and four UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements, for improved image quality and reduced aberrations.

In addition, with Canon’s STM (Stepper Motor Technology), this lens’ autofocusing is said to be accurate and quiet. It also offers smooth and silent transitions when shooting videos. Furthermore, it supports focus breathing correction (when used with compatible cameras) where it'll digitally correct fluctuations that occur when focus changes during video shooting.

All in all, with its compact dimensions, semi-rugged build, and versatile focal range, the RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM looks like it could be a great travel lens for Canon users.

Availability and pricing

The RF16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM will be available sometime in February, but local pricing is yet to be confirmed. In the US, it is priced at US$1,149 or roughly S$1,556. If so, it will be much cheaper than the professional-grade RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM which costs S$4,049. We will update this article once we get pricing details.
