Canon launches new 4K camcorder, the XC10
Canon has just announced the launch of the XC10, a 4K-capable digital video camcorder that marks the start of a new series of digital video camcorders capable of supporting 4K-resolution. More details after the jump.
We first covered news of the then-unnamed 4K Canon camera here, and we’re pleased to bring you the full details as Canon has officially launched the XC10, a video camera that uses four new technologies from Canon: a high-sensitivity 1.0-inch CMOS sensor, a 4K video lens offering 10x optical zoom, the high-performance DIGIC DV 5 imaging platform, and the proprietary XF-AVC video format.
By using the Intra Frame 4K video compression format, the XC10 is able to achieve a maximum bit rate of 305 Mbps, allowing it to apply high-data compression without sacrificing image quality to reduce the data volume. The XC 10 also uses the same video recording formats as the Cinema EOS line-up, allowing it to work with greater latitude for over and under exposure.
The XC10 is also equipped to handle CFast 2.0 memory cards, allowing to capture 4K without the need of an external recorder, while the 12.0-megapixel 1’ CMOS sensor allows it operate at ISO levels of up to 20,000, giving film makers greater flexibility in choosing their shoot timings and locations. A mechanical shutter eliminates rolling shutter skew even at high speeds, and the camera incorporates a 4K Frame Grab feature, which allows you to get 8.29-megapixel stills from 4K footage (at 30 fps).
The XC10 looks very much like a traditional DSLR from the rear.
The XC10 measures approximately 125 x 102 x 122 mm, and weighs approximately 930g. The LCD tilts up approximately 90 degrees and down 65 degrees, while the grip rotates on its axis approximately 90 degrees both upwards and downwards.
Pricing and availability of the XC10 will be announced in mid-June.
