Selfies on film! First looks at the Fujifilm Instax Mini 70

Snap, click and that's it - an instant polaroid print. We take a quick look at Fujifilm’s latest Instax camera at the local launch.

Did you know that more than a million selfies are taken a day? Of these, 48% are shared on Facebook, 30% are taken by people between the ages of 18-24, and 36% of people admit that they alter their selfies. Fujifilm representatives shared these findings with us at the launch, going on to show us how sales of their Instax series have grown steadily over the years.

Simply put, people love taking selfies! And selfies taken on polaroids are very much appreciated by the younger generation because it’s something different and fresh. The fact that polaroids are physical prints lends well to their use in DIY projects and gifts and so highly encourages sharing and creativity.

The Instax Mini 70 then, looks to expand on this trend by including a selfie mirror and a flash that calculates the ambient exposure and adjusts the shutter speed of the camera appropriately for proper, balanced exposure. As we noted in our news piece here, the camera comes in three colors, and have a tripod mount with self-timer function for easy group shots.

For the traditional selfie, there’s a small mirror that you can use to judge the composition of the final photo, so there’s little guess work involved. What we did find was that probably only the person holding the camera will be able to view the mirror properly, so you’ll have to direct everyone.

Given that it’s a 60mm lens on the camera, three people are about the maximum you will be able to fit into one picture if you intend to hand hold the camera, so we’d definitely recommend bringing a tripod if you’re going to be out with larger groups.

Ultimately the concept of these cameras is just to have fun.

Overall though, the camera is fun and easy to use, as it’s small (it measures just 113.7 x 99.2 x 53.2mm) and light (281g) and there really isn’t much you have to do to get a good image –just have fun! After all, when was the last time you had a photograph taken in film?

The Instax Mini is now available in Canary Yellow, Moon White and Island Blue at all authorized Fujifilm dealers for S$199.
