In pictures: Fujifilm's rangefinder-style GFX 50 R

This is Fujifilm's latest camera - the rangefinder style medium format GFX 50R.  Fuji tells us that unlike the X-Pro2, there's no optical viewfinder because you wouldn't be able to fully see all the detail with an optical one. Also,  extra glass would have added weight, so they decided to leave it out.

The notches on either side of the lens mount for the GFX 50R are pretty distinctive, and offer an easy way to distinguish between the GFX 50S and the GFX 50R besides the difference in thickness.

The top dials are quite like the ones you find on the X-Pro 2, knurled for better feel. You might notice that the focus mode selector (S/C/M switch) has been shifted to the back too.

The four-way d-pad on the rear has also been removed to save space. In place, Fuji has added four-way swipe commands to the rear LCD, so you swipe left,right, up or down on the screen instead. Of course, the functions of these swipes can be customized to your liking.

Unlike the GFX 50S, the GFX 50R has its viewfinder built-in. This also has a resolution of 3.69M dots, but with a slightly lower magnification of 0.77x compared to the 0.85x of the GFX 50S. Display lag is a mere 0.005s, and brightness is 800cd/m2.

The rear 3.2" LCD has 2.36 million dots and touch, but only tilts in two axis, unlike the three-way tilt of the GFX 50S.

There are also multiple customizable buttons that you can assign functions to, letting you truly personalize your camera. We count at least four unmarked ones just in this picture alone!

Speaking of customization, the Q menu also does touch, so you can get to your settings even faster. No more menu diving!

That's the GFX 50R in a nutshell. Image quality and overall performance will be similar to the GFX 50S given they share the same internals, but this body will be a better match to smaller lenses, and for photographers on the go.
