OpenAI has been widely-reported to start manufacturing its own AI chips next year.
According to the Financial Times, OpenAI’s custom AI chip is designed in collaboration with Broadcom. The chipmaker disclosed that an unnamed client - widely believed to be OpenAI - has already placed orders worth $10 billion. Broadcom shares soared over the past weekend with the news of the deal.
The move comes amid surging demand for ChatGPT, with OpenAI aiming to double its compute capacity within the next five months. By developing its in-house AI chips, OpenAI hopes to reduce reliance on NVIDIA, the current market leader in AI chips.
This move isn’t all that surprising as most major tech and cloud giants such as AWS, Google, Meta, and Microsoft have been developing their own custom AI chips as part of their expanding Ai strategy.
