Help me study: ChatGPT launches new Study Mode to help you get your straight As

As humans continue to grapple with the ethics of AI inside their homework, ChatGPT surges forward with a new studying tool that helps its best students learn and relearn course material.

OpenAI.

OpenAI today (30 July 2025) announced a new feature for ChatGPT. Called Study Mode, this AI prompting tool is designed to help people (especially students) with deeper learning.

Study Mode’s main draw is that it’s able to take in your course notes and materials to help you learn or revise, and to help the learner fully understand the topic at hand, as opposed to rote memorisation.

OpenAI stated that the mode was developed in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and experts in pedagogy to reinforce certain core behaviours that promote better knowledge absorption. The AI features quirks like active participation, managing cognitive load, developing metacognition, encouraging self-reflection, and providing real-time feedback.

Below is a video of how it all works.

According to OpenAI, these are the key features of Study Mode:

Feature:
Explanation:
Interactive Prompts
Uses Socratic questioning to guide understanding and active learning (does not spoonfeed)
Scaffolded Responses
Information is easy to follow with sections and connections highlighted, reducing the chance of feeling overwhelmed during learning
Personalised Support
Tailors the learning to the user’s skill level, memory, and via uploaded files
Knowledge Checks
Quizzes, open-ended questions, paired with feedback to check for knowledge retention and application in new contexts
Flexibility
Toggle the mode on and toggle off during a conversation, controlling the flow

How to use Study Mode in ChatGPT

Study Mode is available to users who are logged in, and on Free, Plus, Pro, or Team subscriptions. ChatGPT Edu users will get it “in the coming weeks”.

To begin, select “Study and learn” from the tools inside ChatGPT, and ask away.

Limitations

Currently, Study Mode at launch is built using a set of custom system instructions. OpenAI said that its main feedback channel comes from students, and will explore how to make visualisation clearer, set and track goals, on top of adding deeper personalisation.

OpenAI is also a part of NextGenAI, a consortium of researchers and educators exploring how AI tools can influence learning outcomes.
