LG Subscribe comes to SG: Will you pay a monthly subscription to use your fridge or washing machine?

LG has just launched their home appliances subscription service—the first-of-its-kind in Singapore—with a dedicated brand store at Suntec City where you can discover the range of products that are covered under the scheme as well as sign up for a plan on the spot.

Appropriately named LG Subscribe, the idea is simple. You go to the showroom, choose a product (or products) that you want, and LG will arrange for it to be delivered and installed at your home. Up to this point, the experience is similar to how you’d normally go about buying home appliances from any electronics store like Courts or Harvey Norman. Except, you won’t be paying the regular retail sticker price of the appliance. In fact, you won’t need to pay anything at the start. There are no upfront costs or down payments to be made.

Instead, you’ll sign a contract (available in 3-, 5-, and 7-year terms) and pay a monthly fee for the duration of the contract (and yes, there are clauses and fine print to read if you choose to terminate the contract early). At the end of the contract term, you will own the product, there is no need to return it. Technically, you are buying the appliance, just spreading the payments over time. Now, this concept isn’t exactly new as many credit cards allow you to convert bills into instalments. Buy Now, Pay Later services such as Atome and Grab PayLater have also become increasingly popular in Singapore.

So how is LG Subscribe different and why is it called a subscription in the first place? Well, when you “buy” a product with LG Subscribe, you’re really subscribing to a regular maintenance and servicing plan for the product as well as an extended warranty. And that’s what you’re ultimately paying a premium for.

I feel this is an important distinction to make when deciding the best financing option to choose from. For example, if you pick a 7-year LG Subscribe plan, you will get a full 7 year warranty for that appliance, which is more than the usual 1-2 year standard off-the-shelf warranties.

LG Subscribe offers two tiers of servicing, with the cost of consumables all accounted for, you don’t have to pay extra:

• Self Care is self-explanatory; LG will ship you the necessary tools and consumables at regular servicing intervals such as water filter cartridges and HEPA filters for air filters.
• LG Careship is a full-service option where you’ll get a professional in-person visit.

Now, because different products have different servicing requirements and intervals, not every product will have both Self Care and LG Careship options. LG Subscribe plans are also unique to each individual product, so it’s probably easier to check out this LG Subscribe brochure than me trying to list out all the options for every product in this article.

What I will do, is give you a quick comparison of between buying retail and LG Subscribe for one product. Again, I must stress that every product has its own plan, so cost variances may not be directly applicable universally across different categories.

For this example, I’ll be choosing the LG Objet Tankless Water Purifier WD518AN (because I’m lazy and it’s the first product in the brochure above with all the various care options). Prices are correct at time of this article’s publishing. We did not include every store available, as prices are either similar or the product was not offered at that particular store.
