Sony Singapore today (14 July 2022) introduced the new ECM-G1 shotgun microphone. According to the Japanese consumer electronics titan, the ECM-G1 is a small, lightweight sound-capturing mic “perfect for vlogging”.
To start with, its palm-sized 34g body contains a large 14.6mm microphone capsule, housed within a structure that is designed to suppress vibration noise. Besides adding anti-vibration dampers within, the microphone can also wirelessly connect to a Sony camera via its Multi-Interface shoe, if they want to reduce cable-transmitted noise further. Unfortunately, Sony actually hasn’t shared the complete compatibility list for this accessory, but it does have a landing page for compatibility here.

When used outdoors, the ECM-G1’s super-cardioid pick-up pattern helps to reduce ambient noise and better capture the vlogger’s voice. In addition, indoor shooting can benefit from the microphone’s reduced echo pick-up and voice reverberation.

All these features together would make us think that the Sony folks behind this ultra-portable microphone regularly indulge in ASMR videos at every opportunity.

The Sony ECM-G1 is available in Singapore at “select retail shops and online stores” starting from August 2022, although the brand shared no further details like exact pricing or specific retail touchpoints.
