Apple Watch users who need a little extra motivation to get moving might want to pay attention to today’s date – 4 June is Global Running Day, and Apple is marking the occasion with a limited-time reward for fitness-minded users. The company is rolling out a special edition badge that can only be earned today, and the requirement is simple (and obvious) enough: complete a 5km run using your Apple Watch.

If you’re the sort who responds well to gamified fitness, this may be worth adding to your collection. Apple’s Activity badges have been around for years now, offering bite-sized encouragement to get users out of their seats and onto their feet. They show up on any recent Apple Watch model and often appear as time-limited challenges tied to calendar events or public holidays. Some are fairly easy to collect – like the recent Global Close Your Rings day – while others are tailored to seasonal events or global health campaigns.

This new badge for Global Running Day takes the form of an oval-shaped icon that resembles a running track, which feels appropriate given the theme. There’s no complicated criteria or need to sign up for anything – just fire up the Workout app on your Apple Watch, select your preferred run mode, and clock in 5km at your own pace. Treadmill, trail, or a few laps around the estate work too – it’s up to you. The only real stipulation is that it needs to be logged using the Workout app and completed by the end of today.

Apple tends to cycle through these limited-time badges without repeats, so if you miss this one, it’s not likely to come back. For digital badge collectors, it is time to hit that trail or running track later.
