Dyson has introduced a new feature called CleanTrace, which utilises augmented reality (AR) to enhance users’ vacuuming experience. CleanTrace, available through the MyDyson app, uses the lidar scanner on iPhones (iPhone 12 Pro and newer models) to show which areas have been cleaned and which have been missed. The feature is only available on the Gen5detect vacuum cleaner, however. To use CleanTrace, Gen5detect users will have to mount their iPhones to the vacuum using a specially designed clamp, which will be sold separately.
In a press release, Dyson says it developed CleanTrace to address inefficiencies in how people vacuum. This insight was based on “hundreds of hours” of observing home cleaning around the world and studying how long each cleaning session lasts. Despite the Gen5detect model already having a green headlight to highlight dirt, CleanTrace is meant to provide an additional level of verification that floors are thoroughly cleaned.
I think the concept is pretty cool, though I find it odd that CleanTrace won’t work with other Dyson vacuums and only with the Gen5detect. From my personal experience, models such as the excellent V12 detect slim also feature the same functions that allow it to detect microscopic dust as well as the same fluffy optic cleaner head that reveals ‘invisible dust’ on floors. It's also not clear if Android smartphones will be supported.
I guess we’ll find out when the CleanTrace becomes available in Singapore. Watch this space.
