Casio’s Limited Edition Back to the Future watch is a throwback to ‘85

However, you’ll need a time machine to get it now.

Casio’s CA-500 line of watches is a series of digital calculator watches meant to emulate a vintage aesthetic for the modern day. But recently, they’ve released a variant that’s got us asking: Does this really count as vintage? Because to a time traveller, everything can be retro and modern at the same time.

That’s right, this is a version of the CA-500, the CA-500WEBF-1A, that’s based on Doc Brown’s DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future. The watch was made in collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences, an arm of Universal Studios which distributed the original trilogy of films.

It’s crazy to think that such a classic movie was released 40 years ago, and this watch marks exactly that occasion. Apart from the metallic finish adapted from the DeLorean, the watch takes its cues from the time machine’s ‘OUTATIME’ license plate and time circuit display that showed the DeLorean’s present and destination time. The back of the watch also has an engraving of a flux capacitor, to make it look even more like a time machine itself.

The calculator panel on the watch face takes inspiration from the time circuit displays on the DeLorean.

Being a CA-500, this model also comes with the features of the watch line, including the 8-digit calculator, basic water resistance (rated by Casio as being suitable for splashes but not showers or swimming), a 1/100-second stopwatch and five-year battery life via a CR2016 battery.

The watch was priced at S$185, but unfortunately, the watch was made available at 11am on 31 October, and quickly sold out within the hour. If you have a time machine yourself, though, you know what to do.
