According to a report from Reuters, Tesla is working on a six-seat variant of its popular Model Y crossover SUV.

This new model will be produced in China and it's the company's response to competition like the Onvo L60 and Zeekr 7X, as well as market demand for large family SUVs.

Reuters’ sources say Tesla wants to increase the appeal of its popular but ageing Model Y. The report added that the Model Y was the best-selling car in China between January and June, shipping over 207,000 units.

The sources added that Tesla told suppliers to “prepare accordingly for a double-digit increase of Model Y out”.

Interestingly, Tesla sells a seven-seat variant of the Model Y in the US. However, its third row of seats is said to be cramped and would be unpopular in China.

However, it’s unclear how this new rumoured six-seat variant will improve on the seven-seat variant. Tesla will need to find ways to lengthen the Model Y’s wheelbase if it’s to offer more practicality than the seven-seat variant that it already sells in the US.
