Google quietly announced that more Google apps will be joining its Android for Cars programme.

As seen in its blog post and on the Android Developers Blog, cars with built-in Google services will get “dozens” of new apps “to enjoy while parked”, implying that these apps are not strictly for navigation during a ride.

It added that the apps are part of Android’s Car Ready Mobile Apps Programme, which primarily focuses on helping developers adapt apps previously optimised for large-screen formats into Android Auto car displays.

Specifically, both streaming and gaming app categories are called out, which would help make connected cars become more like a typical smartphone.

The Google Play Store sub-menu specifying tablet apps for cars includes several streaming services (e.g. Plex, Red Bull TV, CTV News, NBC News, etc.) and numerous casual mobile games. Frankly, the selection does not seem particularly exciting in the context of Singapore users.

However, we can see the potential in converting popular and relevant streaming apps and popular and competitive multiplayer mobile games. A feature like that can help passengers save on smartphone battery juice while enjoying mobile entertainment on bigger displays at their disposal.

Google said the rollout will start with compatible Volvo cars and PoleStar cars, with “more makes and models” coming soon.
