Another day, another new Chinese EV brand arrives on our shores. The latest to do so is JMEV, a joint venture between the Renault Group and Jiangling Motors Corporation Group.
The first JMEV model to be available here is the Elight, a compact sedan that is roughly the size of a Honda Civic.
It has a single motor that drives the front wheels and delivers 108kW (145hp) and 225nm of torque. This means it qualifies for the slightly less pricey Cat A COE.
How refreshing is it to see a new sedan available.
Battery capacity is a fairly modest 63kWh, and JMEV claims it offers a range of around 600km (based on WLTP testing). Although JMEV didn’t disclose the Elight’s maximum charging rate, it did say the Elight will need 30 minutes to go from a 30% charge to 80%.
The Elight’s interior looks pretty conventional. There’s a large 14.6-inch touchscreen that houses the infotainment controls, and a smaller 7-inch screen that acts as your instrument cluster. Claimed boot space is 410L, which is decent for a car in its class.
Like many other modern Chinese EVs, the Elight has a comprehensive suite of safety features, including 360° cameras, collision detection and warning, blind spot monitoring, cruise control, and more.
The interior looks fairly conventional. Thre 14.6-inch central display dominates the dashboard.
The Elight is an interesting addition to the local EV landscape, mostly because there aren’t that many electric sedans in this space. For those ready to go electric, and are looking for a sedan because it’s typically smaller and less conspicuous, the Elight is worth a closer look.
Availability and pricing
The Elight is available in five exterior colours and two interior trim colours.
The JMEV Elight is available to order now, and prices start at S$216,888 (price includes COE and is correct at the time of publishing). To find out more, either go to JMEV’s website or head down to their showroom at Telok Mansions at 237/241 Telok Kurau Road.
