BYD’s local onslaught continues with the Atto 2 – a compact SUV that the company claims is its most affordable model yet.

Prices start at S$151,388, making it even more affordable than the BYD Dolphin. The Dolphin was S$159,888 when we tested it back in August 2023. It also makes it one of the most affordable EVs you can buy right now.

The Atto 2 comes in one variant. The power rating is 100kW (134hp), which qualifies it for the slightly less costly Category A COE. It also means 0-100km/h takes around 9 seconds.

The Atto 2 is about 4.3m in length.

With its 51.1kWh battery, the Atto 2 has a claimed range of up to 345km (based on WLTP testing).

Positioned as a compact SUV, the Atto 2 measures roughly 4.3m long. To put this number into perspective, it’s about 145mm shorter than the Atto 3 and about the same size as a Honda Vezel, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-30.

Despite its size, boot space remains quite decent. BYD says the Atto 2 has 400L of capacity with the rear seats up. Fold the seats down, and that expands to 1,340L.

Unlike the Atto 3 and Dolphin, the Atto 2’s interior looks more conventional.

Unlike previous BYD cars, which have, let’s say, quirky interiors, the Atto 2’s interior is quite conventional-looking. It’s dominated by two large screens, and it’s filled with the sort of tech that you’d expect to find in a modern car, like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and more.

On paper, the Atto 2 looks like an attractive proposition. Price and features aside, consumers shopping for a new EV now are likely going to feel more assured going with an established name like BYD. After all, BYD is now Singapore’s best-selling brand. The Atto 2 is backed by a 10-year battery warranty.

That said, there’s no shortage of affordable Chinese EVs right now. Apart from the BYD Atto 2, there’s also the Aion ES, Dongfeng Box, Ora Good Cat, just to name a few.
