The new Sennheiser HD 550. Doesn't it look familair? Photo: Sennheiser
Sennheiser has a new entry-level open-back headphone. The newest one is called the HD 550, which, on paper, shares many similarities with the HD 505 Copper Edition that was launched early last month.
Like that headphone, the new HD 550 also has 38mm dynamic drivers. However, it has a slightly wider frequency response of 6Hz – 39.5Hz (vs. 12Hz - 38.5kHz), and a marginally higher impedance of 150 Ohms (vs. 120 Ohms).
Interestingly, these drivers are made in Sennheiser’s Tullamore factory—which we visited last year, and which is also the same factory that makes the legendary HD 650 and HD 800 S headphones.
The HD 550 has an open-back design for a more acoustically transparent sound. And while it’s physically very similar to the HD 505, one thing that we noticed that was different was the filter used to cover the driver. How this would impact its sound signature will be interesting to see.
Stay tuned for our full review of the HD 550.
