Sennheiser has just announced the launch of the HD 505 open-back headphones, expanding the HD 500 series. Compared to other HD 500 series headphones, the HD 505 uses an electrodynamic transducer with a slightly higher impedance of 120 ohms in contrast to the 50-ohm impedance in other headphones like the HD 559 and HD 599 SE.

We had the pleasure of visiting Sennheiser's Ireland factory back in 2024, where we saw how the German brand's transducers were made, either through an automated line or by hand. The parts were then assembled together to form the final product. This factory is also where the transducers for the HD 505 are being manufactured, so check out our feature if you're curious about how they're made.

Canice Koh, General Manager of Sonova Consumer Hearing Singapore, said:

The HD 505 is for anyone ready to experience the audio awakening a great set of Sennheiser

headphones is known for. There is something truly special in here that puts serious listening within arm’s reach of the emerging audiophile or gamer.

With a frequency response from 12Hz to 38.5kHz and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 0.2%, these transducers are sat at an angle in the chassis to replicate the effect of a pair of loudspeakers for a more expansive soundstage.

Sennheiser claims the HD 505 has a balanced sound signature with "punchy bass, effortless mids, and non-fatiguing treble", which we'll certainly be looking forward to hearing for ourselves.

Built with the same design aesthetics as the rest of the HD 500 series, the HD 505 features a synthetic leather headband, velour earpads, and metal mesh earcup covers. It weighs a moderate 237g.

As for wiring, the headphones come with a detachable 1.8m cable that terminates in a 3.5mm plug, although there's a 3.5mm to 6.3mm adapter so it can be used with a wider range of source devices.

Availability and pricing

The Sennheiser HD 505 goes for S$399 and is available now at Sennheiser's website and Amazon. You can also keep an eye out for it at Sennheiser's official stores on Lazada and Shopee.
