Samsung's 2025 TV and soundbar lineup to feature new Eclipsa Audio spatial sound co-developed with Google

Dolby Atmos is getting some competition, with Samsung and Google's joint-developed spatial audio technology making its way into Samsung's 2025 TV and soundbar lineup.

Dolby Atmos has, so far, been the market leader when it comes to spatial audio, but that advantage could be threatened by Samsung's new Eclipsa Audio technology. Co-developed with Google, Eclipsa Audio is set to become available on YouTube first, with creators being able to upload videos with Eclipsa Audio tracks to the platform later in 2025.

Similar to Dolby Atmos, Eclipsa Audio will allow audio data such as the intensity and location of sounds to be adjusted and manipulated, along with spatial reflections, in order to create an immersive, three-dimensional sound.

However, unlike Dolby Atmos, which requires device manufacturers to pay Dolby a fee to use, Eclipsa Audio will be a free-to-use open-source audio format. This could entice content creators looking to offer an immersive audio experience on a budget.

Jim Bankoski, Vice President of Engineering, Google Chrome, said:

We believe that Eclipsa Audio has the potential to change the way we experience sound. We are excited to see how the creator community uses it to create new and innovative audio experiences.

Samsung will be supporting Eclipsa Audio across its entire 2025 TV and soundbar lineup, including models ranging from the Crystal UHD series to the flagship Neo QLED 8K models.

Google and Samsung are also working with the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) on a certification program for devices using Eclipsa Audio, to ensure that the standards of sound fidelity are consistently met.
