DTS Has An Audio Solution Ready for UHD/4K Content
DTS has developed a roadmap of technologies to address all aspects of creation, distribution, and playback of atmospheric audio for UHD/4K media. Instead of adapting the system designed for cinema, this solution is designed from the start with consumer home and mobile applications in mind.
We saw a lot of 4K UHDTVs announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and while their ultra-high resolution and slim designs are rightly the main attractions, the audio aspect shouldn’t be ignored either. DTS has also gotten in the act by introducing a new system for creating, delivery, and playback of audio for Ultra HD content.
DTS’ UHD solution aims to deliver beyond 3D sound over as many speakers as the listener would like. But as Fred Kitson, Chief Technical Officer and Executive Vice President at DTS, is keen to emphasize, it’s not all about the number of speakers. It’s about mobile devices too, as it combines with DTS Headphone:X to recreate the multi-channel audio experience on simple headphones. DTS’ next-gen UHD audio technology also combines with other DTS products, such as the DTS Neo:X upmixing system.
On the content creation and delivery side of things, DTS will be making Multi-Dimensional Audio available as an open object-authoring format to the industry. The company hopes that this can help to avoid a format war.
