Apple reportedly plans to carry out a major overhaul of its AirPods lineup. The company recently updated its second-generation AirPods to include USB-C charging and will now turn its attention to its "basic" AirPods and the AirPods Max.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple wants to keep two basic AirPods models in its lineup but found that sales of the current third-generation model are suffering mainly because customers often went with the cheaper second-generation model.
To get around this, Apple will reportedly launch two fourth-generation models simultaneously. It's unclear how Apple will differentiate the models but Gurman claims the pricier option of the two might include more features like active noise cancellation or Find My support in the charging case.
Speaking of charging cases, the new fourth-generation AirPods are expected to have USB-C ports for charging.
As for the AirPods Max, Gurman expects it to be a minor refresh. There will be a USB-C port and new colours, but little else. That's disappointing to hear considering it was launched back in 2020 so it's nearly three years old now.
That said, I do expect the AirPods Max to support some form of wireless lossless audio – perhaps with the Vision Pro headset, although it's difficult to see how you can wear them both at the same time.
