YouTube Music has some new personalised playlists for users around the world. Starting today, you'll be able to see three new mixes that will help you discover new songs based on your personal taste in music. Discover Mix, New Release Mix, and Your Mix are supposed to help you stay up to date on new songs and broaden your musical horizons, not unlike what Spotify already offers.
Discover Mix first appeared on the YouTube Music app a few months ago, but it wasn't until now that YouTube officially confirmed the new feature. The playlist will deliver 50 new tracks every week, with updates arriving every Wednesday. It will include songs by new artists you've never listened to, in addition to lesser known tracks from artists the service knows you already like. It's clearly a counter to Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist, which also introduces you to new music based on your tastes.
On the other hand, New Release Mix parallels Release Radar, and it shows you recent releases from your favourite artists and others YouTube thinks you'll like. New Release Mix is updated every Friday, which is when new songs generally drop, but there will also be occasional mid-week releases to help you keep up with the latest tunes.
Finally, Your Mix is something of a safe option for when you just want to listen to songs you know you'll definitely vibe with. It's stocked with your favorite songs from familiar artists, but YouTube still throw in some you've never heard of to keep things fresh. This playlist will see small, regular updates to ensure that there's always something new in rotation. One again, this is similar to Spotify's Daily Mixes, which creates playlists based on songs you already like.
Of course, how well this works will depend on how much you use YouTube Music, since it needs to learn and familiarise itself with your listening preferences.
The new playlists are now available through the YouTube Music app for iOS and Android or the dedicated webplayer.
