Windows 8 to be Generally Available on October 26

Microsoft has announced that Windows 8 will be generally available as both an upgrade and on new PCs starting on October 26.

We already know Windows 8 will be released to manufacturing in the beginning of August; we also know that it'll be generally available to consumers sometime in October. But now, we've an exact date for the launch.

At a Microsoft annual sales meeting, Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows and Windows Live Division, has announced that the new OS will ship as both an upgrade and on new PCs starting on October 26. It'll be available in stores or as a downloadable upgrade in all major countries.
