Many popular social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) and a handful of instant messaging apps (Telegram) let you add music to your time-limited updates. One of the biggest messaging platforms is finally adding that feature to its app.

Starting today, WhatsApp allows users to add music to their Status updates. The process is also very familiar if you are already familiar with picking out songs for your time-limited photo and video updates.

As of publishing this announcement, the feature update will be available globally “over the next few weeks,” so check and update your app periodically if it’s not installed yet.

To create a Status, go to WhatsApp and click the Update tab (the leftmost major tab, next to Calls). Then, click the Add Status and select your photo or video to showcase to fellow WhatsApp users.

As shown above, if Music statuses are available, they appear as the first icon in the row of editing tools at the top.

Here, you can select popular songs from WhatsApp’s library. Just note that photos are limited to a 15-second section of the song, and videos can select 60 seconds to feature. Choose wisely since you’ll want to make the most impact with your update. The example above shows what it looks like when you decide on a track and photo to share.

Hit the Done button when you're ready, and it goes out as your WhatsApp status update.

WhatsApp said the song library has “millions of songs” at your disposal and is end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp cannot see what users choose to share, nor know which songs were added to the Status.
