WhatsApp limits message forwarding to 5 recipients to fight misinformation

WhatsApp is limiting the number of recipients you can forward on its instant messaging platform.

WhatsApp has taken another step in fighting the spread of fake news or misinformation.

Victoria Grand, the VP for policy and communications at WhatsApp, said today that the company will limit the number of times a user can forward a message to five. This is to fight "misinformation and rumors".

"We're imposing a limit of five messages all over the world as of today," Victoria Grand, vice president for policy and communications at WhatsApp, said on Monday at an event in the Indonesian capital.

Prior to this rule, WhatsApp allowed users to forward a message to 20 individuals or groups. WhatsApp initially implemented the five-recipient limit in India last July after the spread of rumors led to several killings in the country. WhatsApp started labelling all forwarded messages to combat fake news in the same month too.
