WhatsApp is adding another option to authenticate your WhatsApp account.
In the latest iOS app update, WhatsApp will allow users to use email verification as an alternative to SMS to authenticate their accounts.
While email address verification does not replace SMS verification, it will be useful in situations where cellular service is weak or unavailable. It is also important to note that a valid mobile number is still required for you to use WhatsApp.
If you want to add an email address to your account, go to Settings > Account > Email Address. Once you enter your email address and click "Next", a 6-digit verification code will be sent. The code is set to expire in four hours.
