Instagram just released a new app with a funky name, called Boomerang. Like its namesake that returns to you after you throw it, the app allows you to have the ball fly back into your hand after you’ve thrown it (no, we’re kidding).
But in all seriousness, Boomerang at least lets you watch the ball fly back to you, even if you can’t actually do it. The app creates GIF-like, 1-second video loops of the same scene, allowing you to watch the same scene over and over again, and in reverse.
The premise is exceedingly simple – just press a button and the app will take care of the rest. Unlike Apple’s 1.5-second Live Photos, Boomerang doesn’t actually record video and instead takes a burst of photos and stitches them together into something akin to a GIF. This also means that there won’t be audio in the background either.
As we mentioned earlier, the resulting clip actually plays in reverse as well, and we can absolutely see users creating a whole lot of quirky clips with it.
Boomerang videos are saved in your camera roll, and you don’t even need an Instagram account to get started. The app is already available on the App Store and Google Play. Boomerang joins other Instagram apps like Hyperlapse (time-lapse videos) and Layout (collages), although the former is only available on iOS.
