Singtel-backed HOOQ brings its 20,000-strong video catalog to Singapore
HOOQ, a start-up venture established between Singtel, Sony Pictures Television, and Warner Bros., is now available locally at S$8.98/month. The video streaming service boasts over 20,000 titles in its catalog, including Hollywood blockbusters and a variety of Asian and children's animated series.
Starting from today, TV and film buffs will have one more streaming service to choose from. HOOQ, a start-up venture established in January 2015 between Singtel, Sony Pictures Television, and Warner Bros., is now available locally at S$8.98/month.
The platform first launched in the Philippines, before expanding to Thailand, India, Indonesia, and now Singapore.
HOOQ features over 20,000 titles, including a wide range of Hollywood, Asian, and kid-friendly content. This may just be the largest such catalog available today – in comparison, the US Netflix catalog houses just under 6,000 titles.
The service has been optimized for a variety of devices as well, encompassing everything from PCs and smartphones to set-top boxes and smart TVs (in addition to all Apple devices).
And even though this is an Asia-centric service, the selection of Western titles still appears quite decent, with shows like Supergirl, Lucifer, The Flash, and Arrow available on HOOQ. The company also emphasized its deep selection of children’s titles, including animated series like SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
HOOQ stands out because of its hybrid model, which combines both free and paid subscription tiers to reach more customers. Users can sign up for a seven-day free trial to sample the premium service, but will still be able to access the pilot episodes of all TV series for free even after the free trial expires.
After that however, users will have to pay S$8.98/month to access the full catalog, and subscribers will be able to view content on up to five devices concurrently.
HOOQ also announced a partnership with Singtel to allow the telco’s prepaid, postpaid, and broadband customers to access HOOQ as part of a bundled service package. HOOQ will first be available to Singtel prepaid customers, before rolling out to postpaid and broadband customers over the next view months.
