The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 is one of the last Tizen-powered smartwatches.
Three years after the merger of Wear OS and Tizen, Samsung is going to terminate support for Tizen.
Reddit user Seaweed_Maximum posted a screenshot of a notice from the Samsung Galaxy Store operations team that detailed the termination schedule for Tizen. The key dates are:
- 30 Sep 2024 - The Samsung Galaxy Store will stop selling paid Tizen Watch content.
- 31 May 2025 - The Samsung Galaxy Store will stop allowing new downloads of free Tizen Watch content. In addition, the notice also states that "core services related to this watch will stop everywhere except Galaxy Store > Menu> My Apps.
- 30 Sep 2025 - The Samsung Galaxy Store will stop the re-downloading of previously purchased Tizen apps, which means users can no longer access paid or free Tizen content.
Samsung also posted a notice to developers on the "discontinuance of Tizen-based watch app distribution in Galaxy Store". Developers can no longer register new or updated Tizen-based watch apps in the Seller Portal.
The cessation of support for Tizen will affect all Samsung Gear devices, Samsung Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch3. It will not affect wearable devices such as the Galaxy Watch4 or newer as Samsung switched to Google's Wear OS in 2021.
If you're still using any of the above-affected devices, it is probably time to consider an upgrade. Samsung is expected to unveil new Galaxy Watch7 models in July, one of which could be a premium model to take on the Apple Watch Ultra.
