Razer has announced a ‘paid to play’ program that will award gamers who use its Razer Cortex performance boosting software zSilver points, as part of its newly launched zVault digital currency initiative.

First announced earlier this month, zVault comprises zGold and zSilver, which function as a virtual currency and rewards program respectively. This is Razer’s way of cementing its position in the gaming ecosystem, and users will be able to use zGold to buy in-game items in select games and even buy games from online stores like GamersGate.

zSilver points are earned when you spend zGold, and Razer is sweetening the deal with its new ‘paid to play’ program that opens up new ways to get points. When players launch a game with Razer Cortex – a software program that helps you manage your game libraries, stream to sites like Twitch and YouTube, and tweak system performance – they will earn three zSilver for each minute played.

What can you do with zSilver points? Well, Razer will let you redeem them for discounts or products on the Razer store, and it’s also looking to add other items like movie tickets or coffee vouchers.

However, racking up zSilver points is going to take some time. You’re capped at 900 points a day, so it’s not like you can pull a gaming marathon over the weekend and earn thousands of points. Furthermore, while you can get a product discount for 4,500 points on Razer’s store, you’ll need as many as 220,000 points for a mechanical keyboard.

That said, the ‘paid to play’ initiative will not apply to all games, but it will at least work with popular multiplayer titles like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, and Overwatch.
