Qualcomm's AI advancements cannot be done alone. Vietnam to the rescue! Image: Qualcomm (blog).
Qualcomm has acquired MovianAI, the generative AI research arm under the Vietnamese tech conglomerate Vingroup.
According to Qualcomm’s statement, the acquisition of MovianAI will help Qualcomm make breakthroughs in “fundamental AI research,” which the latter hopes to implement into its chip designs for phones, PCs, SDVs (software-defined vehicles), and more.
The acquisition also saw VinAI’s founder and CEO, Dr. Hung Bui, transferred to Qualcomm’s payroll. Dr. Hung was formerly with Google’s Deepmind project, and VinAI is the other AI subsidiary owned by Vingroup.
According to VNExpress, a Vietnamese online newspaper, MovianAI has a charter capital of nearly US$9 million. Qualcomm did not disclose the exact terms and financial stakes of the buyover.
