OCBC has launched a new mobile banking app for the Apple Watch to provide customers with alternative ways to access a wide range of banking services. With wearable technology usage expected to grow over the next few years, the bank hopes that the new app will make it easier for customers to stay connected on-the-go.

The new Apple Watch app comes with features that let customers check their account balances and view information about credit card usage, bank loans, and insurance. They can also easily see their five most recent transactions by tapping on the Apple Watch, all without needing to log into the mobile banking app on their smartphones at all. In addition, the app can even provide information on the three nearest OCBC Bank ATMs or branches.

In order to get started, customers will need to perform a one-time activation on the OCBC mobile banking app on their iPhone. This activates the Apple Watch app, after which account information and recent transactions can be viewed quickly on the smartwatch.

This service is compatible with the iPhone 5 and newer, but OCBC did not specify if the recently-announced iPhone SE would be supported. The devices must also be running iOS 9 or later, while the Apple Watch must be using WatchOS 2 and up.

For obvious security reasons, the service can only be activated on a single pair of Apple Watch and iPhone devices at any one time, and all account numbers displayed on the watch will have all but their last four digits hidden. Furthermore, no information will be stored on the phone or the watch.

This isn’t OCBC’s first foray into the digital space. The bank recently launched OCBC OneWealth, an integrated wealth management app that provides customers with the latest market information and investment suggestions from in-house experts. In March last year, it also rolled out the OCBC OneTouch app for the iPhone, which gives customers quick access to their account balances and transactions with Apple’s Touch ID.

The new mobile banking app for the Apple Watch is already available for download on the App Store.
