Microsoft Renames SkyDrive to OneDrive

Microsoft has just announced that SkyDrive will be rebranded as OneDrive. The new name will be rolling out soon.

It’s official: Microsoft is renaming SkyDrive to OneDrive, more than six months after the company agreed to change the name of its file hosting service following a lawsuit with British TV broadcaster BSkyB (because of the word ‘Sky’, of course), which Microsoft lost. Prior to this, Microsoft has been using the SkyDrive name (in full or as part of another name, like Windows Live SkyDrive) for six years.

Announced through a blog post, Microsoft is branding OneDrive as the ‘one place for your most important stuff’. For existing SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro users, the service will ‘continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio’.

Microsoft has registered the onedrive.com domain name, and you can now submit your email to be notified when OneDrive arrives.

And of course, Microsoft has prepared an intro video, which we’ve embedded below.

One Microsoft, Xbox One, OneDrive - we should have predicted this name.
