Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update will arrive on August 2, just a few days after Windows 10’s one-year-old birthday.
First announced in April, the Anniversary Update is a big update for the OS, bringing several major new features such as Windows Ink, a faster and more power-efficient Microsoft Edge browser, Windows Hello for apps and websites, a smarter and more accessible Cortana (coming to the Xbox too), and an Xbox Play Anywhere program where you can buy a game once and play on your Windows 10 PC and Xbox One with shared progress, shared game saves, and shared achievements - just to name a few. Other smaller additions include an updated emoji set, Edge browser extensions, improvements to the Start menu and Action Center, and Bash.
Enterprise customers aren’t left out of the fun either, as the update brings two major new security features: Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection and Windows Information Protection. For schools, the Anniversary Update includes tools to simplify the deployment process.
The Anniversary Update is free for all Windows 10 users, and according to Microsoft, there are now 350 million of them. It should arrive for PC, Windows phone, and Xbox at the same time. If you aren’t running Windows 10 yet, note that the free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8.x users ends July 29; after which, you’ve to buy a retail copy or a device running Windows 10.
