Meta is planning to let users in the EU download apps directly through Facebook ads.
In an emailed statement to The Verge, a Meta spokesperson confirmed the company is "interested in helping developers distribute their apps, and new options would add more competition in this space".
Meta is taking advantage of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which will be enforced next spring, to start a pilot with several Android app developers later this year. Meta claims the direct downloading of apps from Facebook ads would boost higher conversion rates for developers.
The DMA could be the reason why Apple is reportedly considering to allow app sideloading in iOS 17 from 2024. The DMA requires all "gatekeeper" companies to "ensure open markets" by 6 March, 2024.
