Two weeks after revealing its worst security breach ever, Facebook gave an update on its ongoing investigations.

According to Facebook's statement, hackers managed to stole access tokens for 30 million Facebook accounts which allow them to gain access to the users' profiles. This is revised down from the initial estimate of 50 million. The first surge in the hacking activity surfaced on 14 September before Facebook identified it as a malicious attack 11 days later.

Of the 30 million accounts, hackers managed to access basic contact information (e.g. name, email or phone number) for 14 million accounts. Additional information such as gender, religion, location, device information and the 15 most recent searches, was accessed by hackers for the other 15 million accounts. Hackers did not access the information of the remaining one million accounts.

More importantly, no data was taken from third-party apps linked to Facebook which include Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Facebook will be notifying the 30 million Facebook users through its Help Center in the next few days.
